Summer Schools

Teaser summerschools

Summer (and winter) schools offer a good opportunity to use the semester break for further developing the content of your field of study or another subject. Numerous international universities offer one- or several-week programs that allow students to focus on certain topics or to get to know a possible host university in advance for a semester abroad. Workshops and seminars are often combined with interesting practical elements and cultural or historical insights.

The costs for the respective summer/winter school programs differ greatly. The price range is between 600 and 2000 euros, but deviations in both directions are possible. Financial support for participation in summer/winter schools is only granted in exceptional cases, but the DAAD in particular offers interesting funding opportunities for individual regions. As of 2021, participation in summer/winter schools is also funded through the PROMOS scholarship. The offer is valid for students and doctoral candidates. You can find further information on the website of the International Office.

When planning, you should find out whether the summer/winter school provides accommodation and if it is already included in the price or if you need to take care of this yourself. You should also consider the respective language requirements: Many summer/winter schools are held in English, but this is not generally the case.

Please note that although some programs award ECTS credits, these are not recognized as regular study achievements in the degree programs of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

A smaller proportion of Goethe University students can also take part in the Frankfurt Summer School (either as regular participants or as buddies).

The International Department informs you about interesting summer/winter school programs via the department´s newsletter. The University of Birmingham, Tel Aviv University, Sciences Po Parisand the London School of Economics in Cape Town, for example, offer regularly recurring courses. You will find further information and other host institutions on the website of the International Office. In addition, the Summer Schools in Europe website offers a good overview of numerous programs across Europe! The DAAD brochure "Shorter stays abroad. How to make a summer school, language course or internship - facts and tips" (in German) provides information on how to successfully plan and complete summer schools.
