Cooperation partners and exchange opportunities

As part of the Master Political Theory, you have the opportunity to study for a semester at the New School for Social Research in New York, the University of Toronto or Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, USA. Some study places are dedicated for the students of the Master program. Furthermore, semesters abroad are possible at one of the foreign partner universities of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Goethe University or at the Institute for Political Science at TU Darmstadt. In addition to Erasmus+ funded stays in Europe, there are exchange options with numerous universities in the USA, Japan or India.

Department of Politics at the New School in New York

The New School for Social Research (NSSR) is a graduate institution in the heart of New York City and counts as one of the most important centers of progressive thought in the world. During World War II, many famous scholars in exile worked here and left their mark on the institution. Among the best-known professors there were Hannah Arendt, Hans Joas, Leo Strauss, Agnes Heller, and Richard Bernstein. Research and teaching in the field of critical social science and political theory hold a special place at the New School for Social Research. At the Department of Politics, where M.A. Political Theory students are enrolled during the exchange, renowned scholars teach in these fields, such as inequality researcher and economist Sanjay Reddy and critical theorist and feminist Nancy Fraser. Through institutions such as the Hannah Arendt Center and the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies, the New School for Social Research provides ample space for interdisciplinary and engaged engagement with contemporary social issues. The approximately 800 students at the university come from more than 70 countries.

Department of Political Science at University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is among the best public universities in the world and the largest Canadian university. It is known for cultural diversity, with over 60,000 students from 170 countries, and its far-reaching social impact through innovation and excellent teaching. The Department of Political Science, with which the exchange program for the M.A. Political Theory is conducted, stands out for its interdisciplinary focus on the study of current socio-political issues. A large and versatile faculty, with internationally renowned researchers such as democracy theorist Melissa Williams and Kant expert Arthur Ripstein, enables students to take small sized courses to engage in intensive discussions. For political theory, the University of Toronto is one of the best places in the world. Institutions such as the Centre for Ethics, which works at the interface between academic and public discourse, open up additional perspectives on current developments, for example in the field of postcolonial thought.

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, USA

The Institute of Political Science at the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Virginia Tech established the graduate exchange program in 2008. Since then, the program has become an integral part of the teaching and research relationship between the faculties at TUD and VT. The program offers two students from each campus the opportunity to gain international work experience by taking classes in fall, serving as teaching assistants, and conducting research for their own thesis.
