Curriculum Vitae


Nicole Deitelhoff has held the chair for International Relations and Theories of Global Order at Goethe University since 2009. She is the designated director of the research alliance “The Formation of Normative Orders” and since 2016, she is the executive director of the Leibniz Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF). Currently, she is heading the research department II ‘International Institutions’ as well as co-heading research department III ‘Transnational Politics’ at PRIF. Before coming to Frankfurt, she held positions at the University Bremen and Technical University of Darmstadt and was a Visiting Professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Her research interests cover contestation and crises of institutions and international norms; the foundations of political rule and its legitimation; forms of international resistance, opposition and dissidence; as well as democracy and social cohesion. She received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for her publication “Überzeugung in der Politik” (Suhrkamp 2006). Her recent publications include ‘Opposition and dissidence: Two modes of resistance against international rule’ (International Political Theory 2018, with Christopher Daase), ‘Things We Lost in the Fire: How Different Types of Contestation Affect the Robustness of International Norms’ (International Studies Review 2018, with Lisbeth Zimmermann) as well as the edited volume ‘Rule and Resistance Beyond the Nation State’ (Rowman & Littlefield 2019, with Felix Anderl, Christopher Daase, Victor Kempf, Jannik Pfister and Philip Wallmeier).

In 2017, the Schader Foundation bestowed her the Schader Award.
