Dr. Ivan Krstic studied chemistry in Belgrade and earned his PhD at Goethe-University in the Prisner lab. He stayed on as a postdoc for two years before deciding to join Elsevier as a Customer Support Specialist. Ten years later, he now serves as Senior Director of Marketing in Elsevier Life Sciences, leading a team of ten product marketers responsible for understanding the needs of researchers in pharma, developing global marketing strategy and plans, creating value propositions, product positioning, messaging content, and enabling sales and other teams to tell the story. His previous role was Director of Product Management and Head of Chemistry Solutions, where he was responsible for business growth, strategy development, roadmap execution, and overall product management of Reaxys. Ivan and his team work closely with pharma customers to help them solve challenges in early drug discovery and lead optimization, as well as pharmacovigilance, using Elsevier's chemistry software Reaxys, biomedical solution Embase, and others.

What he enjoys a lot is being in constant contact with researchers at different stages of their careers and helping them solve their scientific and career problems. The transition from PhD/postdoc to a non-academic career has piqued his interest, and he has given several presentations and workshops on this topic, including at his former research group and universities worldwide. He is happy to share his knowledge and experience at Elsevier and address some of the challenges and fears he has noticed, even among successful senior scientists at large companies or universities.

This Career Talk will focus on chemists, biologists, and pharmacists, as these are the areas covered by his life science unit, but others are also very welcome.

Dr. Theresa Gimbel studied Biomolecular Engineering (B.Sc. & M.Sc.) at TU Darmstadt specializing in RNA biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology.

She continued her academic career with a PhD at the Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration in the group of Prof. Dr. Reinier Boon (Goethe University Frankfurt) with the focus on the role of non-coding RNAs in age-related processes in the vasculature.
After finishing her PhD in 2022, Theresa switched to the pharmaceutical industry and joined the team of quality assurance manager in the insulin production at Sanofi.

Theresa will share the experiences she made throughout her transition to industry and talk about her daily tasks in quality management.

Dr. Dusan Backonja hat von 2009 bis 2016 ein Doppelstudium in Rechts- und Politikwissenschaft an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main abgeschlossen. Daran anschließend war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Professur für Straf- und Strafprozessrecht von Prof. Dr. Christoph Burchard/damals Exzellenzcluster „die Herausbildung normativer Ordnungen“ tätig und wurde vom Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft mit einer Arbeit an der Schnittstelle von Straftheorie und Völkerstrafrecht promoviert.

Nach Abschluss des Rechtsreferendariates im Bezirk des Oberlandesgerichts Frankfurt am Main und dem 2. Staatsexamen (Stationen im Rechtsamt der Stadt Frankfurt am Main und im Bundesministerium des Innern und für Heimat) war Dr. Backonja als Tarifbeschäftigter/Referent in der Zentrale des Auswärtigen Amts tätig. Seit März 2023 ist Dr. Backonja Regierungsrat im Bundesministerium des Innern und für Heimat. Gegenwärtig begleitet er dort in Referat V II 5 (Staatsangehörigkeits- und Einbürgerungsrecht) die Modernisierung des Staatsangehörigkeitsrechts.“

Dr. Stephanie Dinkelaker hat an der Goethe-Universität Biochemie studiert und wurde 2007 promoviert. Nach einer intensiven Forschungstätigkeit im Labor während der Doktorarbeit orientierte sie sich danach Richtung Hochschulverwaltung und Projektmanagement.

Es folgten Stationen in verschiedenen Abteilungen der Goethe-Universität, oft mit Digitalisierungsbezug. So war sie u.a. als Referentin der Vizepräsidentin zuständig für Studium und Lehre tätig.

Von 2018 bis 2020 qualifizierte sie sich berufsbegleitend durch ein Teilzeitstudium im MBA-Programm der Goethe Business School in Digital Transformation Management.

2022 wechselte sie zur Stadt Frankfurt und arbeitet seitdem als Referentin für Digitale Transformation direkt für die zuständige Stadträtin an der Schnittstelle zwischen Politik und Verwaltung.

Dr. David Bausch ist Spezialist und stellv. Abteilungsdirektor für Change- und Transformationsmanagement in der Commerzbank. Der an der Universität Koblenz-Landau promovierte Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftler forscht seit vielen Jahren zu digitalem Stress und dessen Auswirkungen auf Organisationen und Mitarbeitende. Er ist einer der wenigen praxisorientierten Experten im deutschsprachigen Raum. Dazu hat er die Beratung Digi2place gegründet, die sich auf die Schwerpunkte „Digitaler Stress“ und die „Zukunft der Arbeitswelt“ spezialisiert hat und ist dazu Experte des Münchner Leadership Instituts und in der Initiative der Coaching Lions. Sein zweiten Buch „Digitaler Stress: Schattenseite der neuen Arbeitswelt“, wird voraussichtlich im April 2024 im Haufe Verlag veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus lehrt Dr. David Bausch Change-Management in verschiedenen Masterstudiengängen an der Hochschule Mainz. Abseits seiner beruflichen Tätigkeiten ist er in der gemeinnützigen Initiative „Aufsteiger“ als Mentor für junge Menschen engagiert. Und engagiert sich als Ambassador für die Sensibilisierung der Arbeitswelt 4.0.

After studying life sciences and finishing a PhD most of us face the reality of “What the heck do I do now?”. Career fairs and PhD programs provide more and more ideas what to do next but often it is not clear what industry jobs really are about.

Medical Affairs is rather young function in pharmaceutical companies and is still developing and shaping. In short Medical Affairs provides the non-sales connection to Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Patient Organizations and the connection to Clinical Research, but also provides medical expertise inside the company to other functions. In this career talk I would like to give you an idea what Medical Affairs jobs there are in the pharmaceutical industry, how a normal week is looking like for office based and field based roles, how I came to Medical Affairs and what skills are helpful to get you there.

Since Medical Affairs is an integrative function in most pharma companies, I can also provide you some side views on what my colleagues in e.g. Marketing & Sales, Compliance, Market Access and Regulatory Affairs are doing if you are interested in these functions.

Dr. Claus Schuh studied Biology at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany before doing his PhD on “Prostanoids in central and peripheral pain processing” at Gerd Geisslinger‘s Institute of Clinical Pharmacology of the University Hospital Frankfurt in the group of Klaus Scholich. Afterwards, he worked six years as a Postdoc at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Zurich (UZH) establishing and developing in vivo renal Multiphoton Imaging in the mouse. After a short project as coordinator for clinical studies at the University Hospital Zurich he joined Sandoz/Novartis Switzerland as Medical Scientific Liaison/ Medical Advisor in July 2020. In 2023 he joined GSK in Switzerland as field based MSL.
