Doughnut Economics: How to Think and Act like a 21st Century Economist - A Seminar by Yuge Lei & Léon Gross

How can we meet the needs of all people within the means of the planet? The concept of Doughnut Economics offers a radical idea: abandon GDP growth, think in systems, distribute wealth, and regenerate the Earth. The seminar provides a guided tour through the theory and practice of Doughnut Economics as a new economic paradigm at the intersection of sustainable development, human rights, and planetary boundary science.
The goal of the two-day seminar is to equip the participants with the necessary tools to (1) understand the concept of Doughnut Economics, how it emerged, and why it is relevant; (2) confidently navigate the broader discourse of New Economic Thinking, including similarities and differences of its different schools of thought; (3) apply the principles and tools of Doughnut Economics in the field of urban change and business innovation, and (4) to enjoy learning from and with each other as a community of practice.
Accordingly, the seminar includes (1) an introduction to the concept of Doughnut Economics; (2) how it relates to other frameworks of socio-ecological transformation, such as De-Growth, the Care Economy, or the Circular Economy; (3) two practical deep dives in which we will apply the concept of Doughnut Economics to the city and business level; as well as (4) a reflection of how Doughnut Economics relates to your individual research projects and professional ambitions as future sustainability professionals.
The seminar will be hosted by Yuge and Léon, the co-founders of place-based initiatives in Berlin and Frankfurt which have been using the principles of Doughnut Economics to transform the local landscape of governance, enterprise, and research. Their expertise combines conceptual clarity and hands-on experience to deliver an entry-level introduction into the wider landscape of Doughnut and Heterodox Economics, always seeking to create connections to your individual fields of interest and concerns.
Léon (they/them) is the Co-Founder of Donut Berlin, a prize-winning think-and-do-tank for community-driven activism in the city. Grounded in the power of peer-to-peer inspiration, Donut Berlin organizes workshops, events, and lobbying campaigns that seek to turn the ideas of Doughnut Economics into transformative practice. Léon studied earth system science, philosophy, and economics in Europe and the US, always curious about the ways in which people understand, relate to, and resist planetary breakdown. Rooted in the principles of care, craft, and creativity, Léon’s experience includes roles as an academic, speaker, founder, journalist, lecturer, consultant, and community organizer.
Yuge (she/her) is the Founder of Frankfurt Doughnut Coalition and advisor for Sustainability & Innovation at the municipality of Bad Nauheim. With a background in economics and international development planning, she has studied, lived, and worked in Germany, Finland, the UK, South Africa, and China. Yuge has been a consultant and researcher for a variety of development projects throughout the Global South, working in collaboration with public and private institutions, multilateral organizations, educational institutions, non-profits, and innovators. She is currently adopting and implementing the first City-Doughnut in Germany.

BNE – welche Bedeutung könnten diese drei Buchstaben in Ihrem Arbeitsalltag bekommen?
Sie hätten einmal Lust, Ihr Wissen und Ihre Begeisterung über Nachhaltigkeitsthemen zu teilen und in ein Projekt für andere Menschen umzusetzen? Bisher haben Sie aber noch gar nicht in diese Richtung gearbeitet und wüssten auch erst einmal nicht, wie Sie so ein Projekt überhaupt starten sollen?
Annette Stosius, Umweltwissenschaftlerin, Lehrbeauftraget an der Universität Trier und erfahrene Umweltpädagogin bietet für die GRADE Center Sustain und Education ein Seminar an, dass Sie genau an dem Punkt abholen möchte, an dem Sie sich befinden.
Wenn Sie gerne konkrete Ideen für Ihre Arbeit entwickeln möchten, sind Sie hier genau richtig! Wir werden mit Praxisbeispielen, konkreten Alltagssituationen und anhand Ihrer Fragen klären, wie ganz praktisch die Idee der BNE umgesetzt werden kann. Sie haben die Möglichkeit, im ersten Teil des Workshops theoretische Einblicke in die Bildungsarbeit BNE zu erlangen, das regionale Netzwerk und seine Akteure kennenzulernen und bereits erste eigene Idee zu feilen.
Im zweiten Teil werden wir vor Ort in einem GrünGürtel-Projekt am Heiligenstock praktische Erfahrungen sammeln und eigene Ideen weiterentwickeln.
