Exchange program with partner universities in the USA

TCNJ, UW La Crosse, Wisconsin and Massachusetts System, San Francisco State University

Students of Goethe University of all nationalities and almost all majors may apply for a study abroad period (1-2 semesters) at the partner universities The College of New Jersey or University of Wisconsin - La Crosse or San Francisco State University or within the Hessen-Wisconsin or Hessen-Massachusetts state exchange programs. Students of medicine and law may apply, however can only study related subjects at the partner institutions (e.g. Anatomy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Health Studies, International Relations).

No places will be offered at Marquette University and Saint Louis University in 2022/23.

Exchange students who get nominated will be exempted from paying tuition fees at the partner universities. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: All other expenses (e.g. health insurance, travel costs, housing etc.) will have to be paid by the students.

US-Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) require a proof of financial resources before issuing the Visa application forms. During the academic year 2021/22 our partner institutions require proof of US$ 7.200 - 12.000 per semester depending on university and region (Financial Statement, Certificate of Financial Support, Auslands-BAföG, scholarships etc.).

Financial support may be available for the study abroad period – please check carefully whether you are eligible to apply.

Application requirements:

  • Applicants must at least be in their 2nd semester (BA) at the time of application, MA students may apply during their 1st semester
  • applicants for the Hessen programs with Wisconsin and Massachusetts who pursue a degree in an English-speaking major have to submit proof of German proficiency of at least B2
  • Good academic standing
  • Good knowledge of current and historic political and cultural affairs of the USA and Germany
  • Language requirements (please see application manual)

Application deadline: Tuesday, 16 November 2021 

Application documents must be completed in English. Depending on the number of applicants there may be a preselection based on the application documents. The interview will take place at the end of November. Applicants will be asked about their personal and academic motivation as well as their knowledge of current and historic political and cultural affairs of the USA and Germany. Applicants will be informed in the middle of December whether they have been selected for the exchange and for which partner institution. However, the final approval of the participation in the program is done by host institutions after applications have been submitted to them. Undergraduate applicants receive the final results in March/April; graduate admissions may take as long as May/June.
