Prof. Dr. Gisela Welz

Managing Director

Professor for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology

Gisela Welz was trained as a cultural anthropologist and European ethnologist at Frankfurt University (M.A. 1984) and received her Dr.phil. in 1990. Her doctoral thesis was an ethnographic study of urban restructuring in Brooklyn, NY. ("StreetLife. Alltag in einem urbanen Slum", Frankfurt 1991). She held teaching positions in Frankfurt (1985-89) and Tuebingen (1989-96), where she received her postdoctoral degree (Habilitation) in Empirical Cultural Studies for a book on the cultural politics of urban diversity ("Inszenierungen kultureller Vielfalt", Berlin 1996). She was appointed as professor at Goethe University Frankfurt in 1998 and became the successor of Prof. Dr. Ina-Maria Greverus. She worked as a Visiting Scholar at New York University 1992/93, was a Visiting Professor at the University of California Los Angeles in 1996, a Heisenberg Research Fellow of the German Research Council DFG at Humboldt University Berlin 1997/98. Short-term teaching as visiting professor brought her to the University of Cyprus (2004), ISCTE Lisbon (2007) and the University of Manchester (2009). She conducted research in the United States, Cyprus and Portugal. Much of her fieldwork and the MA and PhD projects that she supervises are based in fieldwork in Germany, especially in the Rhine Main metropolitan area.
Urbane Praktiken

Gisela Welz is one of the founding members of the Lab for Studies of Science and Technology (LaSST) at Goethe University Frankfurt. This interdisciplinary network was created in 2019 and serves as a platform for research cooperations, teaching programmes and lecture series in the field of Science and Technology Studies at the interface of Sociology, Cultural Anthropology and Human Geography.

The Institute of Socio-Ecological Research Frankfurt (ISOE) has entered into a new cooperation with Frankfurt Cultural Anthropology. A multidisciplinary junior research group regulate – Regulation of Groundwater in Telecoupled Social-Ecological Systems (REGULATE) was initiated in 2020 at ISOE with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). Six doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from the social and the natural sciences are inquiring into how sustainable management of groundwater as an increasingly scarce resource can be facilitated in European countries. Gisela Welz is affiliated as dissertation supervisor and member of the Scientific Board until 2025.

Funded for three years by German Research Foundation, Gisela Welz has initiated a Scientific Network together Hansjörg Dilger, Professor in Social Cultural Anthropology at Free University Berlin. Titled “Public Anthropology. Knowledge Practices and Societal Interventions", it will convene twenty anthropologists who represent both ethnological disciplines established at German universities. In a series of workshops they will meet with experts - both international and domestic - and discuss how the public impact of ethnographic research can be strengthened, how new areas of anthropological practice outside of research and teaching can be developed and which political, ethical and epistemic effects can be expected from the increasingly close collaboration between research communities and anthropologists.

Langfristprojekt
