Exchange to Australia

Hessen Queensland Exchange 

Hessen students of all majors who have completed at least three (BA) or two (MA) semesters at a Hessen university may apply to participate in the Hessen-Queensland-Program to spend one semester or trimester in Australia (exceptions: Students of medicine can only take subject-related courses at participating universities.) Approx. 2-3 students of Goethe University may participate in the program each year (subject to change). In 2024, only one student from Goethe University will be selected. 

German B2 is required!

 

When to apply? 
22 May 2023 (for a stay abroad during 2024)

general application requirements (for all our Direktaustauschprogramme):

  • applicants must be enrolled at Goethe University
  • applicants must be at least in their 2nd semester (BA), MA students may apply during their 1st semester
  • All majors may apply, there may be some restrictions regarding the available courses: students of medicine and law may apply but will not be able to take classes from their major at the host institution; restrictions regarding courses see first tab "host institution(s)"
  • Good academic standing 
  • Good language proficiency (at least B1, if not stated otherwise) - language certificates are valid for 2 years only!
  • good knowledge of  current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country and Germany
  • good knowledge of the host institution, available classes and a detailed study plan specific to the respective host institution(s)
  • It is expected of exchange students to return to Goethe-University after their study abroad period and continue and finish their studies here. 
  • Students who do not have a German Abitur or other German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung and who are enrolled in an English degree have to submit proof of German proficiency (preferably at least B1)
  • Applicants are expected to be able to take on an ambassador role for Goethe University and Frankfurt

additional application requirements for this exchange program:

  • all students enrolled in a institution of higher education in Hessen - students who are enrolled in several universities may only apply at on of those universities
  • students of medicine and psychology (grad.) may apply to the following participating institutions but will not be able to take classes from their major but only related courses:  
    • Central Queensland University (CQU)
    • Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
    • University of Queensland (UQ)  (not participating in 2023)
    • University of Southern Queensland (USQ) 
  • students of English and American Studies: Please note that it is of great advantage if you have taken classes related to Australia within the field of New English Literatures and Cultures (NELK)  
  • students of all nationalities may apply, BUT:
    • students who do not have a German Abitur and are not enrolled in a German taught degree, will have to show proof of German B2
    • applicants will have to be good Hessen Student Ambassadors by way of showing good knowledge of Hessen and its higher education system
  • English language proficiency (language certificates are valid for 2 years only):
    • language certificates are sufficient for applications for participating universities in 2023 (or Toefl / IELTS):
      • QUT: at least B2 in all parts (Toefl at least 80/IELTS at least 6,0)
      • USQ, CQU, Griffith University: C1 (Toefl at least 90/IELTS at least 6,5

Program benefits
  • Tuition fee waiver (other fees may apply) for 3 (grad.) or 4 (undergrad.) courses per semester (would cost 6.000-10.000 AUS$ depending on the major)
  • Administrative support with application at host institution

Costs before and during the stay abroad
Tuition fees get waived for exchange students. However, costs of studying abroad should not be underestimated. All other costs will have to be paid by the exchange students themselves:

  • room and board 
  • travel costs
  • insurances 
  • other fees at the host institution may apply, e.g. administrative fees    

Monthly living costs differ depending on which city the semester is spent in; costs should be estimated to be at least €6.000 for visa, flight, accomodation, food, books, excursions etc. but could be more depending on one's lifestyle.

It is legal to work 20 hours/week on or off campus.

  • You will need a letter of reference and a language proficiency certificate. Please see about these well in advance (the sooner the better): talk to a professor/lecturer about the letter of reference and make an appointment for the language test. No late submissions!
Interviews:
  • 15 June in the morning
  • there might be a preselection based on written applications so that not all applicants will be invited

  • all applicants will receive an email:
    • invitation to an interview OR  
    • rejection on the basis of submitted application    
  • interview will:
    • be in Englisch (and, if different, language of host country; only expected of applicants who stated in their application that they have knowledge of that language) 
    • be about personal and academic motivation of applicant 
    • include possible other subjects such current and historic political and cultural affairs of host country as well as Germany 
  • final selection of exchange students by Goethe University's selection committee
  • final approval of the participation in the program is given by host institutions after applications have been submitted to them
for the Hessen exchange programs additionally: 
  • after final selection of exchange students by Goethe University's selection committee 
    • application of selected students gets forwarded to Hessen-wide coordinating institution  
  • Hessen-wide selection (a few weeks after interview) 
    • selection of exchange students of all Hessen universities  
    • exchange students get nominated at certain Queensland/Wisconsin/Massachusetts universities

How to finance your stay abroad: 
Students participating in our exchange programs may apply for financial aid and/or scholarships at other institutions:

  • DAAD-PROMOS (in April/Mai for fall; in November/December for spring)
  • DAAD-Jahresstipendium (for studying abroad for two semesters; please check the deadlines which are different for different countries and may be several months before the stay abroad) 
  • Auslands-BAföG (apply 6 months before studying abroad)
  • Bildungskredit
  • other scholarships
