Degree Programs at the Institute of Sociology

Bachelor of Arts

Sociology is the science of social action. Social action is mostly geared to norms, but deviations also occur. The result is conflicts which can spawn new norms. The entire cosmos of human interaction, such as being for, with and against each other, flirts and chats, friendships and enmities, couples, families, associations, networks, enterprises, markets, political parties, states, religions, international organizations, societies, etc., arises through social action.
Sociology investigates such and other phenomena in their process of permanent change and their widely varying interdependencies. To this purpose, it formulates theories to store its knowledge and develops methods to arrive at valid findings about the social cosmos. In this programme, you will learn all the theoretical and methodical principles you require to be able to conduct academic work and apply in practice your knowledge of sociology.

Master of Arts in Sociology

The main idea which drives sociology studies at Goethe University Frankfurt is the teaching of social science thinking and research in their entire breadth both on the basis of theoretical considerations as well as empirical investigation. In the tradition of social sciences in Frankfurt, students should acquire the skills during the course of their M.A. in Sociology to work independently and in accordance with scientific principles and to apply scientific methods and insights to questions relevant to society. The consecutive and research-based Masters programme in Sociology thus teaches deeper knowledge of social theories and methods, as well as skills which allow students to use research results and research methods independently and in accordance with the principles of good scientific practice, in order to develop their own questions and follow them up in the framework of sound and practice-oriented research work.

Master of Arts in Economic Sociology

The Masters programme in Economic Sociology offers research-based instruction in the sociological analysis of modern economies in their social and historical contexts. The social, cultural, institutional and political principles and references to economic action and processes are examined from a social science perspective. Core thematic areas are markets, work, culture of economics as well as the institutional embedding of transnational economic processes. Special emphasis is placed on the examination of players and processes in global financial markets.
