The ambiguity that generally characterises religious texts poses fundamental questions for dogma hermeneutics. How can an ensemble of unambiguous norms be derived from narratives that are open to interpretation? What exactly is the relationship between the bindingness and (un)ambiguity of religious statements? A contribution by Annette Langner-Pitschmann to the volume edited by Marlene Deibl and Katharina Meiringer "Eindeutig mehrdeutig. Ambiguitäten im Spannungsfeld von Gesellschaft, Wissenschaft und Religion“ examines the tension between ambiguity and normativity by comparing the linguistic contexts of law and religion.

The more the talk of God loses its self-evidence in the context of global pluralisation, the more the question arises: Is the idea of God a product of pure fantasy? To get to the bottom of this question, a contribution to the anthology Menschlicher Geist - Göttlicher Geist (Human Spirit - Divine Spirit) takes a look at the concept of the collective imaginary presented by the social philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis. He works out that the imaginary is largely beyond our control and thus breaks down the dichotomy between found reality and invented imagination. What can be learned from this with regard to the structure of our reference to God?

The paradigm of digitality is one of the dynamics of the globalised present that shape theological thinking. A compendium, Theologie und Digitalität (Theology and Digitality), edited by Joachim Valentin (Goethe University), explores a broad spectrum of related aspects. In this context, the article addresses the question of what intellectual adaptation might be necessary in the horizon of the digital present, so that the concepts of transcendence and immanence can continue to be thought consistently. What habits of thought does the culture of digitality bring with it, and what needs to be considered with regard to the category of sacramentality if it is to generate resonance also in this space of the present?

Democracy, ambiguity, religion. Anthropological and theological perspectives.

Joined monograph: Raphael Susewind, Andreas Telser, Helmut Gaisbauer

In a globalised world, the complexity of social relations is growing. Subsequently, the question of how society should deal with situations that are difficult to interpret is coming to the fore. Against the backdrop of populist political styles, there seems to be good evidence for the claim, that the ability to tolerate ambiguity is crucial for non-violent and democratic coexistence. The study examines the potential of categories, such as ambiguity and diversity, for both the description and the normative orientation of contemporary societies. The empirical findings of lived tolerance of ambiguity in the context of political fields of tension are combined with reflections on the meaning of ambiguity in religion, art and humour.

Globalisation is inextricably linked with increasing interdependence of ideas, people and markets, especially due to the high mobility of people and the digitality of their communication. Inasmuch as there are many benefits associated with global interconnectedness, it however entails resistance and antagonism towards certain social dynamics. Throughout this process various different interpretations of reality and their contingency are unveiled. Consequently, the plausibility and design of religious claims to validity in today's pluralistic society are brought into the focus of theological reflection.

Within this context Theology in Times of Globalisation aims to contribute to the elucidation of the relation of the validity and particularity of the Christian outlook and anthropology to the legitimacy and universality of its normative claims.

RESEARCH INTERESET:

Design of religious claims to validity in the context of a globally connected world:

In consideration of other religious (or anti-religious) cultures - (how) can we assert that the way we talk about (the christian) God still has meaning? (How) Can a claim to universal legitimacy be uphold?

Link between the obligations of religious claims to validity and collective and individual identity formation:

How can we acquire the Other?

To what extend could and should religious narratives - sensibly and with reason - influence that process?

Religiosity and capacity for democracy:

How can the Christian outlook interchange with other global ideas?

Theoretical conditions for an implementation of universal claims to validity in a pluralistic world:

How are Christian social ethics supposed to deal with international power asymmetries as detriments of global commodity and financial flows?

Tensions between physical distance and digital proximity:

How does our sense of pre/absence change?

How does this affect the way we speak of God's pre/absence or even the revelation of God as propinquity?

Imagination, realisation/visualisation, constructivism. Imagined reality in religion and politics.

Habilitation treatise

In face of a vast global presence of religious ideologies, the question how to relate religious faith to public reason gains crucial relevance. It is commonly problematised in terms of the compatibility of 'religious' and 'secular' belief systems. The project scrutinises to what extent the reconstruction of religiosity, as a moment of imagination, generates a new understanding of the relationship between faith and reason. It draws a parallel to those approaches in political philosophy that analyse the rationality of recourse to the imaginary in social action.
