A longitudinal study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders

Nacaps is a long-term study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders and includes regular surveys on career paths of highly qualified academics in Germany – for the use of researchers and academic policy makers.

The study is a joint project of the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) and more than 50 doctoral degree-granting universities across Germany. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). For the first time, doctoral candidates were surveyed for this study in February 2019. The second round of the survey has closed in April 2021. The first cohort of participants of the panel study was invited to participate in the follow-up survey in June 2021. The latest round of the survey took place in spring 2022.

New survey results

New results from the National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) are now available online. In addition to the evaluation of the 2019 survey, the results of the 2021 survey with more than 10,000 participants at over 60 universities can now be accessed online at nacaps-datenportal.de. The portal provides an overview of the doctoral conditions, career intentions and general conditions of life for doctoral candidates in Germany.

How well do doctoral candidates feel in regard to their supervision? How much time can they devote to working on their doctorate? How has their employment and funding situation changed in recent years? With interactive graphics on these and similar topics, the data portal provides an overview of the living and working reality of doctoral candidates in Germany. It is based on the data of more than 30,000 doctoral candidates who participated in the surveys of the panel study Nacaps in spring 2019 and 2021.

The results are presented in the portal in the form of indicators. These are clustered into seven thematic areas:

  • Working and employment conditions
  • Supervision situation
  • Type and structure of the doctorate
  • Motives for doing a doctorate and the course of the doctorate
  • Career paths and perspectives after the doctorate
  • Mobility
  • Living situation / personal background

As before, the results can be differentiated according to gender, migration background, educational background, parenthood, subject group and membership in a structured program. With the broader data base, it is now possible to filter results according to doctoral cohorts or to the time of the survey. The anonymity of the survey participants is always guaranteed.

If you would like to be informed about the publication of study results in a timely manner, we recommend you to subscribe to the Nacaps newsletter. Publications obtained from the survey will also be announced on Twitter and on the Nacaps website.

If you agree to resubmit the follow-up questionnaire when registering for the first time, your contact details will be stored in compliance with the privacy policy. After two years, you will be invited again as a doctoral candidate or as a postdoc for a follow-up questionnaire.

The survey is carried out in cooperation with over 50 higher education institutions, including Goethe University.
