Once uni-assist has checked and verified that all necessary documents have been submitted and all conditions for admission are met, you will be notified of this in the form of an assessment report ("Prüfbericht"). This also includes your applicant number. Uni-assist will then forward your documents to us and we will include you in our selection process.

Once the actual admissions procedure at the university has been completed, you will receive a notice from Goethe University stating whether you have been admitted or not, and giving further information. At the earliest, the admissions procedure is carried out 3-4 weeks after the final deadline.

For courses for which you apply directly to the university, you will receive notification of admission from the university’s students registration office ("Studierendensekretariat"). If you have applied to the "Studienkolleg" (preparatory college) at the International Study Centre (ISZ), "Global Affairs, Study and Teaching" will notify you of admission.

If you fail to meet formal requirements, you will be notified accordingly by uni-assist. Please make sure that uni-assist has received a valid mail address to contact you! This way, any remaining questions can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Your documents will remain with uni-assist and can not be returned.

When applying for the subsequent semester, all you have to do is send uni-assist a new application form with your applicant number and pay the handling fee ("Bearbeitungskosten"). The documents already with uni-assist will then be allocated to your application.

Please note:

Uni-assist will keep your records for one year; then they will be destroyed. Therefore never send original certificates! Should uni-assist require further documentation from you, or if there are further questions, they will notify you accordingly. You can also contact uni-assist yourself.

Selection process and Numerus Clausus (NC):

Applicants whose application documents are complete and who fulfil all admission requirements (e.g. valid university entrance qualification and language skills) will be allocated places as available. There is a difference between courses with restricted admission and courses with no admission restrictions. If there are no admission restrictions, every applicant who fulfils the requirements – including international applicants – will be allocated a place.

For courses with restricted admission there is a Numerus Clausus. This means that if there are more applicants for a course or subject than there are available places, there is a selection process. This selection process differentiates between applicants from Germany or EU member states and applicants from outside the EU.

Applicants from outside the EU:

The selection process for applicants from outside the EU is always carried out by Goethe University itself. In the subject areas of medicine, dentistry and pharmacology, 5% of all available places are reserved for applicants from outside the EU (Please check: >>>Admission Procedure medicine/dentistry for Non-EU applicants). In all other courses with restricted admission, 10% of all available places are reserved for applicants from outside the EU.

German applicants and applicants from EU member states

Undergraduate applicants (Bachelor’s, state examination) from EU member states are treated the same way as German applicants. There are some courses with nationwide admission restrictions; for these there is a central admissions procedure carried out by hochschulstart.de. Currently this applies only to medicine, dentistry and pharmacology.

For some other courses, the universities (and also Goethe University) apply internal Numerus-Clausus selection processes. Please note that the required grades or another qualification system that will result in a place is not fixed before the admission process begins, but is only established in the course of the selection process, depending on the number of applicants for the semester and what the average grades are (some courses have additional criteria).
