1. Who can participate in the Buddy Programme?

Supporting Buddy: students at Goethe University who have already completed at least one semester here and speak German fluently
International Buddy:
          - International students registered at Goethe University
          - International students coming to Goethe University for an exchange semester
Student status: all (Bachelor, Master, "Staatsexamen", “Magister“)
The Faculty of Economics (Fachbereich 02) offers its own Buddy Programme for EXCHANGE students (e.g. Erasmus): The SSIX Buddy Programme.

2. What benefits does the programme offer in general?

The programme offers great opportunities for German and international students to get to know fellow students from other cultures and study programmes. Apart from a cultural and language exchange, participants can attend Buddy Programme events and events organised by the "Internationaler Studientreff" (IST) and engage in a multitude of activities together with other German and international students.

3. What benefits does the programme offer to international buddies?

The programme is designed to support international students as they find their way around campus and in Frankfurt. They can check with their supporting buddy when they have questions about their studies or German bureaucracy. Furthermore, having contact with local and other international students facilitates a good start to studying and living in Frankfurt.

4. What benefits does the programme offer to supporting buddies?

Students at Goethe University have the opportunity to support an international student when they start out here in Frankfurt. Intercultural workshops are offered to hone specific buddy skills in a professional way. If local students participate in one of these workshops and at least one events organised by the IST (sign up for the IST events here) and if they fill in the feedback form at the end of the semester, they will receive a certificate for their volunteer work in this programme.

5. How can I sign up for the programme?

In order to sign up for the Buddy Programme, please visit our registration page.

6. How do I get a certificate as a supporting Buddy?

After a successful buddy semester, supporting buddies have the opportunity to receive a certificate for their voluntary work. Besides helping and supporting your buddy during the whole semester, there are some other requirements for the buddy certificate:

  • Take the “Buddy-Selbsttest” in order to prepare for your buddy semester (on OLAT)
  • Participate in an intercultural buddy workshop (sign up on OLAT after you have been matched with an international buddy)
  • Participate in at least one event of the “Internationaler Studientreff” (IST) (sign up for the IST events here)
  • Fill out an online evaluation form after your buddy semester

The buddy workshop for supporting buddies is a workshop on intercultural competence, which serves as buddy training and has been designed specifically for this programme. The workshop uses case studies to help you assume your role as a buddy and deepens your understanding of cultural (mis)communication, cultural dimensions and much more.
The IST events offer you and your buddy an opportunity to engage with other buddy teams, to make new friends and to get to see Frankfurt from a different perspective.
After your buddy semester, you give us feedback by filling out an online evaluation form and you send us a completed checklist (download the checklist here). Then we will issue your certificate.
Of course it is possible to participate in the Buddy Programme without attending these events. However, experience has shown that they really improve the experience of a “joint semester“ for both supporting and international buddies!
Please note: The buddy breakfast does NOT count as an event of the “IST” for the buddy certificate.

7. How can I sign up for the events of the Internationaler Studientreff (IST)?

Registrations for the IST events start at the beginning of each semester. Learn more about the IST on their website and find out about the current events. If you want to sign up for an event, please do so on OLAT.
Please note: Some of the events are very popular, and the number of participants per event is limited. It’s worth to sign up quickly after the start of the semester in order to get a spot in the event of your choice.

8. Where do I find an overview of events currently organised by the Buddy programme?

The sections What’s new? and Events offer information about events within the Buddy programme. There is also an up-to-date calendar of events here. Like our Facebook page, and you will never miss an event.

9. Who can I contact with questions and comments?

If you have any further questions, comments or suggestions, just send an email to buddy@uni-frankfurt.de.

10. Can I use the Buddy Breakfast as event for the certificate?

No, the Buddy Breakfast is a kick-off event to get to know each other and does NOT count as event for the Buddy Certificate.

11. Do I have to participate in another “Buddy-Schulung” if I am a supporting buddy for the second time?

The intercultural buddy training (“Buddy-Schulung”) is not obligatory. However, if you would like to receive a certificate for the programme, you have to take part in this training for supporting buddies. If you participate in the buddy programme for the second semester, you do not have to attend the “Buddy-Schulung” again in order to obtain another certificate.
