GRADE in times of Corona * update as of May 5, 2020 *
Dear Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs,
the Corona crisis and the measures Goethe University is taking to limit the corona risk are also affecting GRADE and our services. In the summer term, all of our workshops are taught online. We are confident that we will be able to cope with the new circumstances in a professional way and we are happy to take you with us on this unprecedented adventure!
The publication of the workshop program summer semester 2020 is done in two steps. At the beginning of April, the courses offered in April and May were activated. As of today, all workshops taking place in June and July are open for registration. We are pleased that, despite the difficult starting position, we are able to offer you a somewhat limited, but overall varied and attractive workshop program! Other events such as the CareerTalks, Social Events, Center events etc. are postponed to a later date in this or the next semester.
In the current situation, the GRADE team mostly works from home. The Coaching sessions as well as the Open Office consultation hours are postponed or take place by telephone. The GRADE staff is available for you via their office telephone numbers or email adresses at the usual working hours.
Stay safe and healthy!
Doing your PhD in self-isolation
Which impact does the Corona crisis have on doing your PhD? Which topics should you deal with in this context? Which advice can supervisors give you to help you manage the extraordinary situation?
Here is a video that provides some food for thought for you with respect to five themes: structuring your private and professional life in times of Corona, supervisors‘ expectations, the impact of Corona on research and the collection of data, consequences of Corona for the academic job market, and the question of whether one should postpone one’s final oral exam (Disputation) or rather choose to perform it online, if possible.
NACAPS National Academics Panel Study of doctoral candidates and doctorate holders
First results available
The first results of the National Academics Panel Study (Nacaps) are now available online via a data portal: nacaps-datenportal.de. The portal presents analyses of Germany´s largest survey of doctoral canditates based on the data of more than 20.000 respondents. Doctoral candidates and doctorate holders throughout the country are surveyed at regular intervals on the study conditions for their doctorates, career aims and professional development, as well as on their general life situation.
The Early Career Researchers of Goethe University showed an above average participation during this first round. So we hope that this high level can be kept up now for the follow-up survey, which started March 3, 2020. Active participation is very important because only with a wide range of respondents can we gain a full picture of the doctorate landscape.
Take part! Make your experiences count!
