Center for Islamic Studies

The »Center for Islamic Studies Frankfurt/Giessen« is one of four university-based Centers for Islamic Theology in Germany funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Center, co-funded by the Federal State of Hessen, dates back to an initiative taken jointly by Goethe University Frankfurt and Justus Liebig University Giessen. It coordinates the teaching and research of the Institute for the Study of Islamic Culture and Religion at Goethe University (professorships of Qurʾanic Exegesis, Islamic Intellectual History, and Culture and Society of Islam in Past and Present) with those of the professorships of Education with a focus on Islamic Religious Education and its Didactics in Frankfurt and for Islamic Theology and its Didactics in Giessen. Providing a framework for joint research activities, the Center aims at facilitating cooperation with neighboring disciplines such as the Christian theologies, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies and other relevant disciplines of the humanities and social sciences.
