Anna Pless (Kulkova) has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the Goethe University since September 2021.

Anna received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Political Science at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE, Moscow, Russia). In 2014-2016, she worked as a researcher at the HSE Laboratory for Political Studies and taught classes on Political Behavior and Research Design. In 2016-2021, she pursued a PhD in Political Sociology at the Centre for Sociological Research (CeSO, KU Leuven, Belgium). In her PhD, Anna studied whether and how secularization brought about changes in cultural politics in Western Europe in 1981-2017, focusing specifically on transformations of public opinion polarization and voting patterns.

Anna’s research is situated in the field of quantitative political and cultural sociology. She is mainly interested in how social identities and value divides affect political preferences and behavior across Europe. Currently she is a part of the project ‘Does Europe grow together? Convergence and divergence of political attitudes in Europe’ studying trends in public opinion polarization in Europe. More information about the project.
