Health insurance is required in the issuance of a residency permit in Germany. If you are not insured, you must pay all incurred medical costs yourself and medications, doctor visits, and hospital stays are very expensive. Before arriving in Germany, please check if medical costs incurred will be coved by your health care provider. If your health care provider will not cover your costs in Germany, then you must purchase insurance here. Student health insurance obtained at a state regulated insurance company costs about 75€ per month.
EU citizens, who already have health insurance in their home country, should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You can visit a doctor here in Germany and the costs will be settled with the health insurance company.
