This project is part of the CRC 1629 "Negation in language and beyond" and investigates the comprehension and production of negation in children. In previous studies it has been found that negated sentences cause more difficulties for both children and adults than affirmative sentences. However, it has also been shown that an appropriate context can facilitate the processing of negation. Therefore, this project will focus in particular on the relation between negation and the context of the negated sentence: In what kind of contexts do children start to produce negation? Do certain connectors lead to negation being produced more frequently? And what kind of context facilitates the processing of negation? These questions will be investigated using various methods such as a corpus analysis, a sentence completion study or eye-tracking. The results will contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between negation and context, particularly with regard to language acquisition.
