The following information only applies to students who began their studies before the winter semester 2022/2023.

 Important information on supervising the Master's thesis

The first examiner must be a member of the Department of Social Sciences with a doctorate.

Persons who do not belong to Goethe University can also be appointed as second reviewers by the examination board. This must be applied for to the examination committee.

With the approval of the chairperson of the examination committee, the Master's thesis can also be written at an institution outside the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, e.g. the Institute for Social Research, the Sigmund Freud Institute or the Institute for Social-Ecological Research. In this case, the topic must be set in consultation with a member of the professorial group of the responsible subject.

The following groups of persons are entitled to supervise a thesis in the MA Sociology:

  • Professors
  • Research assistants who have been commissioned with the independent performance of teaching duties
  • Assistant lecturers and lecturers for special tasks
  • Private lecturers
  • Associate professors
  • Honorary professors
  • Emeritus professors
