Vita - Prof. Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann
Since 2022, Professor Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann has held the Professorship on International Institutions and Peace Processes at Goethe University. Previously, she held the Chair of International Relations at Zeppelin University (2018-2022). Her research focuses on current challenges of a multilateral world order, international organizations, international norms, democracy and rule of law promotion, and peacebuilding.
Lisbeth Zimmermann studied political science at the FU Berlin with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation (2002-2007). From 2008 to 2011 she was a doctoral fellow in the project "Transnational Democracy and Justice" within the Cluster of Excellence "Formation of Normative Orders" and from 2011 to 2012 a doctoral fellow of the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt. In November 2012, she was awarded a PhD with a thesis on "Global Norms with a Local Face? The Interaction of Rule of Law Promotion and Norm Translation in Guatemala" at TU Darmstadt. From July 2012 to June 2015, Lisbeth Zimmermann worked as a Post-doc in the context of the Cluster of Excellence "Formation of Normative Orders". From 2015 to 2018, she was a senior researcher at the Peace Reserach Institute Frankfurt.
Fellowships as a visiting researcher took her, among others, to the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. (2011) and to the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence (2015). Lisbeth Zimmermann was also a fellow in the program „Fast Track“ by the Bosch Foundation (class of 2015-2017).
Lisbeth Zimmermann was co-spokesperson of the Early Career Scholars Group of the International Politics Section (2012-2014) and co-spokesperson of the IB Norms Research Group (2017-2020), both in the German Political Science Association. She was spokesperson of the research cluster "Governance of Global Cooperation Networks" at Zeppelin University (2019-2022). At Zeppelin University, she also supervised a group of scholarship holders of the German National Academic Foundation.
From 2015 to 2018, Lisbeth Zimmermann was PI of the DFG-funded project "International Norm Dispute: Contestation and Norm Robustness." Since 2019, she has been leading the DFG-funded project "Open or Closed International Organizations: Conditions for Policy Change through Contestation." She is Principal Investigator in the BMBF-funded consortium TraCe "Regional Research Center Transformations of Political Violence" as well as of the ERC Starting Grant FARRIO "The Effects of Far-Right Challenges on International Organizations".
