Subsequent to completion of his studies in biology at the Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Vienna, Georg Zizka continued his doctorate in the Department of Botany and Palaeobotany at the Senckenberg Research Institute. He then spent eight years as a postdoctoral researcher and curator at the "Palmengarten" in Frankfurt and completed his Habilitation at the Goethe University in 1994. One year later, he was appointed professor of Special Botany. Simultaneously, he became the Head of the Department of Botany and Molecular Evolution Research at the Senckenberg Research Institute with the Herbarium Senckenbergianum. Since 2007, Zizka has been a member of Board of Directors at the "Senckenberg Nature Research Society" and on the Governing Board of the "Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre" (BiKF).
